Care and Maintenance of Exterior hand forged iron

Because our iron hardware is made using traditional methods, it will rust unless properly maintained.

After exterior iron is installed, coat it thoroughly with either linseed oil and/or wax. It is best to use linseed oil first and then wax a few days later.

Linseed oil will penetrate the iron, but be careful! Rags soaked in linseed oil can self ignite. Follow the directions on the can.

Wax provides a protective coating. Use any good paste wax.

No matter which method you choose, you will want to check the iron and re-coat periodically at the first sign of rust or every 6 months, whichever comes first. After three years, you should have sufficient buildup to last many years.

Iron exposed to salt air will rust very quickly. Iron must be painted or powder coated to deter rusting.
